SVG to PDF messes up text

Hi. I'm trying to make a .pdf from a .svg file I made using the spread sheet program Gnumeric. The graphic looks very nice in Inkshape, but when I save it as a .pdf I'm asked wheter I want to convert the text it contains to paths. I prefer not to that, but if I don't the text is missing in the .pdf. If I do, the text is there, but it doesn't look nice.

Can't grapics in pdf's contain text?

I'm new to graphics on the computer, so forgive if my question is bit silly.

Thanks,

Daan

Just in case anybody is wondering, I solved the isue. What I do is:
  1. Save the .svg as an Encapsulated PostScript file (.eps) in Inkscape
  2. Insert the .eps as a picture into an OpenOffice text document
  3. Export the OpenOffice text document to a .pdf

When saving as .eps in Inkscape, I converted text to path, because otherwise it looked bad. But now I use MS fonts Arial and Times New Roman, and I think they remain nice in the .eps (but have not tried extensively).

When inserting the pictures into the OpenOffice text document, they look crappy, however, after exporting to .pdf, they are nice again, and they stay fully scalable.

Red face

I used another solution before finding about your solution.

1) Created fantastic graph with GNUmeric [Best spreadsheet I have seen in Linux]
2) Saved the svg file
3) Opened svg file with inkscape and do whatever editing is needed (e.g., comments, arrows, balls, etc.)
4) Group everything with inkscape and save the new svg file
5) Export the png file from inkscape
6) Import pgn file from OOo Writer
7) Create pdf file

Glad it works for others too. Indeed, png is a fine format too, but keeping it scalable by saving as .eps can make it look better when you have to change the size of the picture in OOo.

(png is raster format, in eps it stays vector graphics)
