The best modems are the external ones that plug into the serial port. They work great with Linux.

Any external serially connected modem should work fine I specify serial as depending on your system USB connected ones may pose a problem.

so long as you dont use a winmodem, youll be fine. any hardware modem (serial or internal) will run along smoothly, driverless and free. as they should be.

im using a USR hardware modem at the moment.

The perfect modem for you...

Hello NPRI, [ evL ] here...

I am telling ya, don't mess around, go get a Zoom 3049 56K V.92 External Modem.

You will have a big smile once you plug this thing into your serial port. I currently run one on an old Compaq Proliant 800 server running Debian Linux and it works great.

Read this ::
The Zoom/Modem V.92 External Model 3049 is a high performance 56K fax modem that plugs into the serial port of a computer using Windows, Macintosh, LINUX or UNIX operating system. The Model 3049 outperforms earlier V.90 modems by implementing both V.92 and V.44 standard technology. The V.92 standard supports modem-on-hold, Quick Connect and faster upload speeds. The enhanced V.44 compression standard delivers higher speed WEB browsing. Both standards combine for an improved Internet user experience.

You can find out more at this URL ::

http://www.zoom.com/products/dial_up...al_serial.html

The 3049 modem will be the first on the page, it is black.

Ok buddy, I hope this helps, go get this modem and watch your worries disapear!

Code:
Vendor Id USR3070, Serial Number 2744908212, checksum 0x29.
#     Version 1.0, Vendor version 0.0
#     ANSI string -->U.S. Robotics 56K Voice INT<--

don't really choose usb...maybe you will have problems with linux...always prefer external serial modems.

Here's the modem I bought recently. Serial, external, 56k, v.92, all the good stuff. $16 brand new, free shipping. Even says Linux compatible on the manufacturer's site (which also lists it for $54 heh). Nice and fast too, well for 56k modems anyway.

This link goes to the modem page at the store
Here is the manufacturer's page on it
