    Lenovo offering Linux preloaded

    Hi guys,

What do you think of this?

BBC NEWS | Technology | Lenovo to offer Linux on laptops
Lenovo and Novell To Offer Linux Preload on ThinkPad Notebooks

I am in two minds. On one hand it is good that another hardware vendor is taking Linux seriously but on the other they have chosen Novell, who I am still unsure over after they gave into Microsoft's bullying over the as yet unspecified patents.

Hi - Yes I read about that. I think it's okay but I have mixed feelings. I don't want to resurrect the old 'Novell / Microsoft' debate which we've had over and over, but hats off to Dell for at least listening to their customers. It seems that Ubuntu have done us all a favour by creating such a usable and popular distro.

It doesn't matter which distro in my opinion. The fact is they are choosing Linux and that is a benefit to the community at large. HP are set to make an announcement later in the year about shipping Linux too. At this rate we will see more open specs and more driver support. This should be pretty good for us.

Yep, that would certainly be a fantastic outcome from this news. It might even encourage a few more people to get involved in open source development ... Developers, developers, developers ...
