It is neither. Solaris is a UNIX operating system developed by Sun Microsystems, and until very recently it would only run on their proprietary SPARC processors. There is an X86 version available now (OpenSolaris), however, so it will technically run on any Intel-compatible chip.

Solaris is not new to x86. Solaris 8 could also run on Intel compatibles, but support was dropped when Solaris 9 was released. Personally I find it to be the best OS available for what I do. I would not suggest it for video recording though. Since it has run on commodity hardware for only a, relatively, short amount of time it will likely give you problems with a camcorder. If you want to set up a streaming video server, or video editing then you should consider it since it often has higher floating point performance than Linux.

AFAIK Solaris for x86 has been around since the mid 90s. A quick search on wikipedia says 2.5.1 I think...Anyways, Solaris can scale a lot better than Linux out of the box, but for what I do, it sucks rocks. It is slow as ****, even on SPARC for workstation stuff. For what you want to do, it is definitely not the right choice.
