SCO goes down in flames: Novell owns Unix!

Here's an interesting article on the SCO case for anyone interested:

The day Linux fans have been waiting for since SCO attacked Linux on May 12, 2003 has finally arrived. U.S. District Court Judge Dale Kimball has ruled that Novell, not SCO, owns Unix's IP (intellectual property) rights. This, in turn, means the end of SCO's cases against IBM.

    Hi ozar!
AH dammit man, you beat me to it!

I think this is good news indeed, as long as Novell doesn't get stoopid all of a sudden.

I don't think it's good news ... Microsoft has effectively 'got into bed' with Novell, and might be nicely lined up to take them over. If that happens ...

Can be interessting to see, how linux in time can get more closed source as more people get into *nix.
*Nix got over 350 distros, will they all suddenly become illegal ? Then *nix will be the rebel OS, ohh yeah count me in

yeah, was gonna say that this is a hollow victory. MS still came out on top with just a slightly lighter wallet. will be interesting to see what novell do next.
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

It's definitely going to be interesting to see how this all plays out over the next few years. I'm not sure how the Microsoft/Novell deal will turn out now that the courts have ruled that Novell has copyright ownership to Unix. It would be funny if it turns out that Microsoft is the one needing protection from Novell.

I'm not too sure Novell would make that deal with MS again if they had a second chance. But then again, we have no Idea why MS gave them all that cash, it could have been that MS saw this judgment coming and made an "under the table" deal to avoid a showdown with Novell.

Just about the only thing I really don't like about this SCO ruling is, the GPL won't get tested in court like we thought it might.

But you are absolutely right, it would be VERY funny to see Novell turn on MS, then of course MS would use the old "Embrace, Extend and Extinguish" on Novell.

Novell should do the smart thing, and I know I'm dreaming here, but put Unix under some sort of independent controlling body. That way if ANYONE goes belly-up, the legacy and future of Unix are still fine.

In other words, put it into public domain. I thought most of Unix was public Domain anyhow.

They already have - It is under the control of The Open Group. The Open Group control who gets to use the Unix name and that's through certifying operating systems as being conformant with the Single Unix Specification.
