First thing to do is download a disto and run it. Try getting a livecd so that you can try it out before installing it. A common choice for new users is Ubuntu but you can check out the popularity rankings on Distrowatch.com

Here's the best advice you'll ever get on learning Linux...
Use it, and when it breaks and you dont know what to do, ask on here about how you screwed up. We'll all have a good laugh (of familiarity 'cos we'll have done the same thing when we started) and point you in the right direction.Linux user #126863 - see http://linuxcounter.net/

google searches help a whole lot with learning linux. It took me about say...what... 1-2 months of just screwing around (and having my parents yell GET OFF YOUR COMPUTER) before I became so comfortable around it that I'm 100% Linux now.

As suggested, get a simple distribution. Something like Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS etc etc. Preferrably something which has a LiveCD option. The LiveCD means that you can insert the disc into your rom-drive and boot up Linux from the CD, without doing anything to your harddrive. It's fully usable and if you like it...you can install it right from your desktop..and browse the internet while you do so.

I have a link for you, I'm about to redo the site but the content is what matters here: LavaGem - Linux-Guide! Maybe it can help you a bit to understand things.
