    Windows is Free

Just an interesting article. Maybe some of you folks have read it before. I do agree with this fellow in some way, well at least what he's saying is making sense (to me that is).

Windows Is Free (A TLUG Article)

Note: It might seem like a long read, but it's actually worth it.

It's quite well written but my eyes were bleeding by the time I got to the end (a bit long as you say).

I was just thinking ... I never actually bought a copy of Windows. It always came pre-installed on my machines. Experiences with installing it came later when it went wrong.

I'm not sure I like Linux journos / commentators. They know what we know, but then try to spell it out for us. I can feel myself saying, 'Yeah, yeah ... we know all that. Did you get paid for writing this?' They seem a bit like consultants who 'borrow your watch then tell you the time.'

I don't think there are many fresh insights to be had these days ... Those might come from some of the more innovative uses of Linux.

Hehe, strangely enough I felt the same when reading through it . He took a bit long to come to the point and it truly does feel as if people are trying to put words in our mouths.. The reality is there is a VAST variety of Linux users, meaning that every one uses it a bit different and with all the capabilities of such an open system it's impossible to make a statement in the name of every one.

Though, as I said. I do agree with his thesis.

Yep, fair enough. I did pause at one point: he said something about developers not caring about the needs / wants of end users. I was thinking, 'What, you mean the people who actually build the operating system?'

To me that seemed a tad judgmental. There might be a little snobbery involved there: 'I'm a man of ideas! Not like those nerdy programming types.' You tend to find people taking sides in any 'community'. Of course everyone thinks they're on the 'winning side.'
