    Linux belly

Hello - I think the phrase was coined by Cousinlucky some time ago. Those of us who spend too much time tinkering with Linux tend to develop a bit of a belly. I blame the lifestyle!

Any hints for getting trim again? I walk a lot and don't overeat, but the belly is starting to develop. It must go!

You must be reaching your 30's then

Don't worry, we all develop a belly upon reaching our 30's. Not a thing you can do about it, it's natural....

Nope, I'm 43. I was very slim in my 30s. I'm not fat, but I've seen the light and it's time to start doing situps. Computers are bad for your health!

One thing Messrs. Torvalds and Stallman have in common: they look a bit porky!

I probably won't get much of a belly for awhile. We do too much PT (physical training) in the Army. 5-7 days a week, we run 4+ miles 2 or 3 of those days. Maybe when I get out, though.

Yeah, that level of fitness must be great! I had an ex Marine as a friend once and he smoked and had put a bit of weight on. He was also into computers and now lectures in that subject.

As if on cue, I turned 25 yesterday and realized I had gone up a notch in my belt. I don't blame the belly on Linux, though. I blame it on birthday steak and fries followed by chocolate-covered ice cream cake.

I can't offer any help on how to lose the belly though. I've looked fervently over the years for some form of exercise that doesn't *feel* like exercise, because as soon as I think of it like that I stop doing it.

The best shape I've been in so far was in college, when I walked everywhere and it was generally uphill (the campus was in the Texas hill country). In that case I had no choice but to hoof it a couple of miles a day. Anywhere you went was uphill.

    Wink Recipe

Eat less than you move. Move as much as you can. Exercise your stomach muscles. You can always break your stay before PC for 5 minutes. I'm running 2 times 6.5km/week, and play volleyball once a week for 2 hours.

Fingal, my pressing desire to be on-line has indeed widened my middle. At 63 I tend to not too much care about being and looking overweight. However there are simple things and ways to " get rid of the belly " without working up a sweat every day.

When you start to feel hunger coming on peel a fresh lemon and put it into a blender with a cup of warm water. Grind it up and let it sit for a minute. The pulp will rise to the top and you can spoon it out. Run the mixture through a strainer and drink slowly. This cleans your innards as well as dampening your appetite and when you eat it will take less to fill you up. You can make a lot of this and put it into a thermos to bring to work every day. Cutting down your intake of meat and bread will also slow down the growth of your belly.

If you have the time and the necessary desire you can purchase a champion juicer and start drinking raw fruit and vegetable juices which will clean the fat out of your body as well as making you much more alert. A combination of raw beet and carrot juice four times a week will wash your belly away in no time.

The eating habits we develop in our teens and twenties, when we are at the most active, become a ritual hard to break when our lifestyles change. I remember when I got married I weighed 145 pounds; in seven months I weighed 222.

I have friends who have developed " computer spread " even worse than I have so I have resigned myself to just live with it. Good Luck!!

Yes good advice. I've been spending more time at the PC lately, at the expense of more important things I suppose.

I installed Mandriva 2007.1 the other day and it needed a lot of tweaking. I had to disable IPV6 and add a couple of DNS IP addresses before I could access any repositories. Then - because I only began with a minimal installation - I had to download a hell of a lot of updates and libraries.

My computer is in great shape, but I've been better.
