    You'll get different answers.

    Some find KDE faster.

    Some find Gnome faster.

    Some find Xfce faster.

KDE and Xfce feel faster than Gnome, for me.

You'll need to try them all and decide which is faster for you.

Yeah, FVWM is probably about the fastest thing out there, but it's a window manager rather than desktop environment.

In my experience and from fastest to slowest, it's XFCE, Gnome and then KDE.

xfce is probably the fastest if you turn off the KDE/GNOME pre-loading for apps (though apps start slower). i don't use gnome much but KDE can be fairly fast when it's stripped down (either custom compiled or the KDE packaged with kubuntu).
Here's why Linux is easier than Windows:
Package Managers! Apt-Get and Portage (among others) allow users to install programs MUCH easier than Windows can.
Hardware Drivers. In SuSE, ALL the hardware is detected and installed automatically! How is this harder than Windows' constant disc changing and rebooting?

I assume that whoever the second last replyer was, that he is right saying that KDE is the slowest followed by GNOME and then XFCE.

I used GNOME no matter how long it is now. I don't want XFCE, I just want GNOME. How should we install openSUSE with KDE and GNOME intalled at one time?

It's probably wrong to assume one is slower than the other, but it is of course your option to do so.

I think you choose both during the installation if you want both on the desktop. Otherwise, you can probably use Yast to go back and add whichever one you want in addition to the other.

    Hardware...configuration time...other factors...

Depends on what you are asking for?

FluxBox seems to fly, but then you have to configure a lot manually and while I use it sometimes, the time to do manual tasks sometimes takes longer than a wizard.

KDE is bulkier, but has wizards that can configure some things much faster. So on a fast machine, it is actually faster to use KDE than fluxbox, if you understand my point, even though a specific app may load a second slow.

Of course on a slow machine, use Fluxbox.
