    Check out Cygwin for something like that. But what you should really look at is a live cd, you boot from it and run linux from it without installing anything, it runs from the cd.

    I take it you're a windows user? Probly, and I'll assume you are then I can give my answer.

    By all means try Cygwin if you want, but valan is right; in terms of purity of unix, its badly bent. It inevitably has a heavy bias towards Windows because of the differences between the way unix and windows work. You'll probably learn little from it as it's aimed at people that want to use unix tools and services on windows rather than as a learning tool.

    Dont be afraid to try Unix (Solaris, BSD, etc.) and Unix-like (Linux) operating systems. Linux is probably the easiest because of the wide range of live CD's, distribution variation, hardware support but you can try the others too - they've all got at least one free version available to download.
