    Do you think it's a good idea?

    Perhaps distributing Windows on a DVD install per machine would be the best idea. It would actually be a step up in that technology as a complete reinstall followed by a user's own update DVD or CD would be the best way reset their system after it goes down.

    In light of that, distributing a Linux install DVD would give users the chance of test driving and using Linux once they see the many many benefits of it.

    The only hold up I think are some apps, like games that typically run better on Windows.

    * However *
    By way of installing VMware you could have the best of both worlds where Linux is the primary system, uses VMware to run Windows and from there Windows apps like games and such would run 99.99% as if it were a Windows only system.

    I'm using Slackware here on my AMD64/Via system and it is a dream! If only we could make installing Linux a breeze and I think developing Linux install DVDs are the best way to do that...

    Just my thoughts for today

    Another interesting article concerning the unbundling of Windows and PCs:

    I am of the opinion that it should be an option, not a requirement. Also, other operating systems should be offered and additional choices.

    Market share will help hardware support, and the availability of software. I see that as a benefit. Also, I welcome the end of Microsoft-tax.

    But is this the way to do it? I'm not sure.

    This whole thing is more philosophical in nature than it is technical. So the debate revolves around a 'which evil do you prefer' type of question.

    I just can't help feeling that OS-X will be the biggest beneficiary of the whole ordeal. And we all know who's got shares in OS-X...

    ---

    I wish I (as OP) had something more intelligent to say on the matter, but truth is I don't know what to think.
