    same goes for Crux or Gentoo but its not exactly something that new users should jump into. you are bound to learn just as much in Ubuntu as Slackware just not as fast. how you get there isn't important just that you get there.

    You'll learn as much as you want to learn in any distro. The kicker is that if you start with a hard one you may run out of steam before you get to that stage. Something like a graphics driver with no X running, or a network card can really degrade your enthusiasm early on.

    Good luck with your search, I hope you find a better distro.
