[SOLVED] The best things come in small packages...
the best (as ambiguous as that is) micro/mini/nano/tiny/insect/munchkin/midget/small linux distribution(s) available is|are:
...
i dont know... i was hoping all you could help me.
And not just the SMALL, but the FAST too?
for small i know of DamnSmallLinux and Slax, and very impressive they are too... but there are so many these days... i can barely keep track of all the one's i've seen.
puppy, sauver, ummmm..... yopper? was it one of the small ones? frugal? oh i cant remember, my head seems dizzy from rabbidly chasing after every new distribution... it feels almost as if i'm ready to settle down and build my own one, if only i had a clue where to go after sitting there with a LFS bare system infront of me. I think it best i go for the Virtualisation route instead. My PC can sit there nice and happy with its teens of opperating systems on it, but it's not enough. my geek thirst demands and craves more. i envision running a virtual linux system inside my main linux system and also a virtual windows system inside that main linux system also, so two virtual machines inside my main linux... and when i say "main".... i'm thinking stripped down... like DSL kinda stripped down... or near it at least.
I'm not sure its wise given my skill level to think about going for a LFS level of stripped down as a starting point... Slax might be the way to go, given it's bright colours and child like ease.
this is assuming i'll be able to use it to run these yet to exist virtual systems so i can run photoshop seamlessly in my linux desktop environment, looking pretty next to my konqeuror (sp?!) browser windows as i watch television shows off the internet and various other tasks across my three monitors.... oh yeah, that'd be handy having support for that out of the box, or at least at all.
ok, thats about enough ramble for one post...
fast, small, and as if it wasnt even there, but definately is, as you can see it (it has a gui), but is so fast and takes up almost no space.... what is it.... what's the solution.......

i've been around some more, bumbled into this old post o mine, thought i might as well give an answer.

some exeptional pieces of open source software distribution are...
Slitaz. a basic but full enough desktop linux for under 30mb. looks great, runs faaaast, and a very pleasant compliment of software in the repository.
tinycore. 30mb was too big for ya? this one starts at only 10mb! you get just enough to get started tho... a desktop and a packagemanager pretty much it.
#! Crunchbang linux, it takes up more space, but is a lean configuration of ubuntu that's giving xubuntu a serious run for its money.
Deli Linux... not many desktop 'nix distributions are so capable of being run on old hardware. i put this on a pentium 133 16mb hitachi and had it running very pleasantly... tho, not the most pleasant user experience ever.
get yourself an arch linux and use dwm if you really want something light n swift.
