    Smile Kudos to Feisty Fawn!

I am brand new to Linux. I started in 1977 with fortran and punch cards and moved through DOS and all the flavors of windows. For the past 7 years I've tried to switch to Linux.... knowing that it was simply a superior beast! This week I've done it. I have to hand it to the programmers of this version (Ubuntu 7.04). I used the windows installed and in about 30 minutes I was using Linux on a dual boot with XP.

I have to say this is an awesome system. I still have a steep learning curve, but I am determined to make the mindset change. I used the Synaptic Package manager to install a bunch of programs. I finally learned a bit about the terminal and managed to install gdesklets. Fantastic applets. My machine is just about identical to an IMac GIU. My scanner works perfectly. My audio works perfectly. My monitor is flawless. My laser printer works perfectly.

    Yeah for Open Office!

As a multimedia online learning developer for our local government, I am a bit tied to Adobe Creative Suite... but alas.. .I will just maintain the laptop for that program alone. Everything else is now Ubuntu. I hope to learn a ton in the next year or so.

    Glad to meet you all!

Welcome: it's always good to read such an enthusiastic response to Linux. I have a friend who lives in Quesnel BC btw.

    Smile Quesnel

Quesnel! Wow... They're about to have BC's first volcano in 700 years. Another Mt. St. Helens they say....

Gutsy Gibbon... bring it on! It can only be better...

I already beta-tested Gutsy. I wouldn't bother with it. The only thing that seems decent would be the new gnome and the kernel. Some of us already know about the new Gnome. However, the newer kernel makes Gutsy better for newer computers: It doesn't crash upon booting, nor does it stop the user from being able to use the Live-CD. The kernel is what makes Gutsy a bit better. Still, Feisty and earlier version have Reconstructor. Until it's made for 7.10, I'm not going to be interested in 7.10.

    So, I'm sticking with Feisty.

    Gutsy Gibbon

I'm going to install it if for no other reason that I need Linux experience. I have way too many gaps in my knowledge. There are some elementary things that I don't know. I'll live with the machine 16 hours a day for months..... break it if I can.. . and re-install.... It's the only way I seem to learn. It's hard to know what books to read first! The installation paradigm has been my toughest leap. I haven't a clue what file extensions mean yet. In Win at least I know setup.exe or install.exe was pretty much it.... other than .msi files. I have learned sudo and package manager... but still don't know what to do when it says.... can't find package...... I know where it is... but linux doesn't tell me where it EXPECTS to find it. So... I can't move it there....

    I'll get it eventually.....
