    Smile Dont give up

    hi,
im new to linux, have been using microsoft since dos 3.11 !
i tried some live cd's suse was good but the pack thing put me off, i tried mandriva which is also good and recomended by a french it guy i know.
i installed fedora and it was ok but didnt recognise my hardware correctly and was a bit bulbus if an os can be.
    i then tried ubuntu,
the live cd ran quick and ok on my laptop p4 2.8ghz 512mb,
but on my pc celeron 2.4ghz 256mb it took 20 mins to load! then another 20 to get to the install page then ground to a halt!
i nearly gave up thinking it was to demanding for my pc, but i found the alternative iso and tried it, 1st time failed it stuck at 6%, then on boot it said it found bad files, i tried again and it worked.
its very good and i love it! ive been wobbling things around the screen for ages now

just wanted to say dont give up its worth the effort.

    Ubuntu is good.

I'm amazed you can wobble stuff with 256 mb of RAM though.

I installed Feisty on a P3 with 256 mb of RAM, works as well.

Furthermore, i didnt have the alternative iso @ the time with me, i was @ someone else's place.

So i went through the slow hard process of going with the full install CD and the GUI on 256 mb of RAM.

What the OP puts across is correct. Never give up.

Why didn't you just try xUbuntu instead? It doesn't need as much memory as ubuntu does so it would be faster.
