    Microsoft's Marketing Skills

When Vista was released over here in the UK, MS ran an ad campaign on the
telly that consisted of people going wow - it then showed the Aero program
    switcher thingy.

I figured MS had finally lost the plot - or that Vista was so bad that is all they
had to show for the years of development.

I'm prepared to admit I was wrong.

I took my Mepis laptop to work as I needed a machine I could cart about for
a couple of days. I have Beryl set up as my Window Manager. You know
Wobbly windows, spinning desktop cubes, cool fades and all that.

I witnessed pure GUI lust. Windows users (XP and Vista) wanted this OS
based purely on what it looked like. They didn't care about anything else.

Two of my colleagues have tried it. One is still using it. I don't think a fifty
percent conversion rate is too bad So maybe Linux should be evangelized
based on what it looks like.

    What do you think?

I think Beryl/Compiz and any sort of mix of the 2 looks better than aero. My brother, with his misguided ways, has Vista and Aero and... it's just not that impressive. Stuff fades and wobbles minimizing... it's just not impressive.

The problem is that the Linux mindset (and I don't disagree with it) has always been that the raw functionality is what powers the OS, and eye candy can sometimes be nice, but should NEVER be the focus of the OS.

Because we don't need to press sales or maintain a certain number of users, I feel like we can promote Linux on what it can do. And then, if people say "But it's ugly!" or "But I like using GUIs, and Vista / Mac OS X is so pretty!", then we can break out Xgl and prove them wrong .

But making eye candy the main selling point of the OS is just a bad idea, I feel.

I thought like that and I still do but, if Linux is to become truly mainstream,
it needs more people to start using it. There is no denying that sheer gui lust
is a powerful tool. And particularly for Mac users (well all of the ones I know)
what it looks like is far more relavent than what it can do.
