    Simulators and operating systems

    Hi,

What is a simulator after all? Its a piece of software that resembles real life right? Just like the flight simulator used for pilot training etc. But what is the exact difference between an operating system and a simulator that acts like an operating system? Any examples of such simulators? Thanks..

The main idea of them is that:
    - You can run a 2nd OS at the Same Time
    - You can play with a OS when you are in your own envoirment
    - You can run Windows in Linux
    - You work on "virtual" hardware. So you can test Hardware Software without affecting you own
    - You can play with kernel options without destorying your Real system
I think you see the idea now.
I am building my project in a VirtualBox. (innotek)
Since I can put that HD on my USB Drive. And just open it on nearly every system at work.
WinXP or WinVista or Linux or BSD.

Well hope that explained it a bit.

I think emulator would be a better term than simulator. Wikipedia explains what it is.

:O did i read that right??

you can stick your virtualbox on your usb drive n not just walk around with your own portable linux, but a windows in there too!? oh my!
is this so great that you can just stick it into any machine that's already switched on and booted into it's own OS, or do you gotta boot into the host os on the usb first before accessing your virtualbox?

time to recommision my pendrive & the plan to always take my OS with me, methinks.
