New machine
So I was browsing around Dell's website after reading about how they've been doing extensive testing on their machines under ubuntu and plan to release machines with ubuntu pre-installed. First I browsed desktops and wasn't impressed by the "customization" options.. I then found myself in the server section and was acutally quite impressed with the "customization" options offered... Long story short I decided to build a Dell Power Edge 2900 tower server for my home.
I went with a dual board, dual 2.0ghz quad core xeons, 8gb of ram, Four 146gb 15,000 rpm SCSI hard drives no raid, 768 mb geforce 8800 video card, Two Dell 24" wide screen ultrasharp lcds, kb/mouse. After taxes etc... It came out to $5,128.51 USD which I thought was n' outstanding deal for everything. Everything should be in by mid nov. The monitors are on high demand so i'm in a 3-5 week waiting period for them which will most likely be sooner. I wasn't going to recive the video card untill nov 30th and it's already shipped.
Anyway, I really don't have a primary intention with this machine I just wanted somthing new and bad ass for home. I'm thinking the 1st drive will be solaris 10, 2nd debian 4.0r1, 3rd nexenta gnu/solaris. I'm just so excited to be gettin a new machine I had to tell someone.

Bah!!!

Appearantly I have the complete opposite taste in machines! I've already decided that if I ever get another desktop (I'm all about laptops now) it will be a MiniITX, NanoITX or a new PicoITX based PC. I've always had the theory that, for a desktop computer, a +1GHz processor is all that is needed. The problem is that no processor manufacturer agrees with me!"Today you are freer than ever to do what you want, provided you can pay for it!" --Bad Religion

That machine is going to be ridculously loud. I think you'd do a lot better to build yourself.
I have a Poweredge and they are so noisely it's unbelievable. I've spent many an hour inside noisy comms rooms and server bunkers, but it's not until you're in your own home running one that you realise how impractical they are. If you go for a desktop oriented system you will at least get one with fan and CPU throttling. Poweredge fans are always on full!

I am not worried about noise, I have a rack running here now in my laundry room with a sun t2000, sun x4500, hp proliant, hp msa20 raid, and a mac sever (which isn't mine) but the rest are.. To be honest the extra noise would be un noticed.
Now all that is left to do is wait for the new machine and i'm having a T1 put in within 2 weeks. The business cable isn't cutting it anymore.
p.s. I work from home and run my own business from home just incase anyone was wondering why I would have a rack in my laundry room.
