    Linux from scratch

I've decided that I'm going to take on a project of Linux From Scratch. Before I start though, I'd like to ask if anyone here has already tried doing Linux from scratch. If so, How'd you like it?

I'm starting the project because I figure there's a lot to learn when installing Linux from source code. Before I start, though I'm probably going to try a few other distros, as I've only tried Debian and Ubuntu so far (Ubuntu being the one I'm using at the moment). Any suggestions or opinions welcome.

    Regards,
    Robert

I've never tried LFS so can't say much about it, but you might also take a look into Rock Linux:

    Main Page - RockWiki

It's another of those build it yourself projects that you should be able to learn plenty from.

Also, do a search on the forums because Linux From Scratch has been brought up many times, so you might find some interesting information in older threads.

    Good luck with the project!

Thanks for the suggestions, ozar. I'll definitely look into the older forum posts and such. I'll also look into Rock Linux. One thing I am wondering though, If you don't mind me asking, is apt-get configurable on a custom system? I was wondering because apt-get is by far the most useful tool I've seen, but I've also only seen it on Debian based Distros.

Edit: Doh! Nevermind, Apt only works with .deb files doesn't it?

Apt-get was designed specifically for Debian, but other distros have been known to use it. I'm not sure how much reworking was required to make it work with the non-Debian based distros, though.

I'm sure it's possible to make it work with just about any distro, but it might be lots of work.

Man, you're fast. If it'll work, I'm willing to find out how. One of the reasons I switched over to Linux is because I welcome challenge. There's a sweeter victory when a challenge is involved. A lot of people get mad when there's a driver issue, but I welcome it.

Anyway, if this project works out-which I hope it will-who knows, I may even start up my own Linux distribution. To quote the movie "Anti-Trust": "Anybody in their garage with a good idea can put us out of business", Who knows maybe soon we'll be saying goodbye to M$. Feel free to donate to "the team" behind my new distro.
