A friend of mine is making his own distro, not all the way from scratch but pretty much. I don't know much abotu it. He has a guy at his work scripting a instal script in various languages to make it easier and faster. im still new to linux and have only used a few flavors of such but mostly everything that is out there is based off of a older distro. All they do is slap a new logo on it, add some files and change the name from what it was to their own name. Im trying to say it would be nice to see someone get some cor files and put it in there and than script their own from there all from scratch like lfs a bit but start with the kernal and go from there. I know you couldn't do all fo the files your self becuase that would take a ridiculously long time for one person to do.

Why? Ubuntu is without doubt the most popular Linux distribution there is. Ubuntu is based on Debian which is known for it's reliability. They're not screwing around with low level stuff because that's what Debian do, they're adding more features to make it more user friendly, quicker and easier. I don't care about the originality so long as they've put sufficient effort into new features.

wouldnt most things made from lfs be original distros?
Microsoft isn't evil, they just make really crappy operating systems.

TechieMoe's Tech Rants

I rather agree with techieMoe. Basically, on the distro front, we have virtually every possible view of software imaginable. And far too many of these are, indeed, tiny variations on existing distros.
The solution is not to create a brand new distro from scratch. The solution is to take what already exists and enhance it. For instance, look at the E17 window manager. This brings a new graphical environment to Linux, without needing a specific distro. Or look at Compiz Fusion: a brand new 3D desktop, for any distro. Or look at Ubuntu's Bulletproof X, which attempts to create an uncrashable X. For now, it's on Ubuntu, but I'm sure it can be ported to any distribution.
I think it's fun to try out new distros for kicks and giggles, but once you have a powerful distro, advancement comes from what you can do with it, not on creating more wildly divergent distros.DISTRO=Arch

I do agree also. It's nice to be able to run a stable os.

I do agree with the fact that we shouldn't keep splitting the distro base up even more. I myself am starting a Linux from scratch project, but that's for my own personal learning experience, not to distribute to the whole world. The only way I would start distributing it is If I came up with a great idea that nothing else had yet. Even then, I would probably just release that single idea and not a whole distro based upon it.
