    Walmart sellss $200USD Linux computer

Walmart, at least here in the U.S., is going to sell an Everex computer with Via C7-D processor for about $200 U.S. It will have a new distribution called gOS.

    Wal-Mart sells $199 Linux computer - Boston.com

I don't know much about Everex or Via, and the gOS website is still under construction apparently, not much content yet. Opinions or experiences?

So $200 is ~= £100. Hmmm. I wonder if the Linux distro supports clustering? I wonder if they ship internationally?

It has a Via Technologies C7-D processor in it. It's "suppossed" to be carbon free. Sounds like a gimic to go along with everything else "green". I pulled this off the web site.

    "World's First Carbon Free Processor"
"Designed to be the ideal desktop processor choice for corporations seeking to significantly save on their power bills, while delivering the performance and rock-solid reliability needed for productivity applications, the VIA C7®-D processor is the world's first computer component to be sold as carbon free. By offsetting every kilogram of carbon dioxide produced in the generation of electricity to power the VIA C7®-D processor, over the lifetime of the PC through regional projects in energy conservation, reforestation, and alternative energy, VIA is defining a new era in eco-friendly computing."

VIA C7®-D Processor - VIA Technologies, Inc.

Off brand processor. I wouldn't go nuts for this computer just because it has linux and wal marts selling it. You can buy a better computer from Dell and put linux on it yourself and still be in better shape than what this thing is capable of.

off brand cpu? not hardly Via has one of the coolest series of processors. for starters they make a series of small form factor and nano form factor motherboard and cpu setups that are great for a lot of applications. dont discount it too soon just because its not AMD or Intel. via has been around for a LONG time.

I've been thinking about buying a MiniITX-based computer, which is offered with the C7, for a while now. I just checked, and a 1.5 GHz C7 is in fact rated at 12W of power consumption, which is a lot better than any Turion or Core Duo processor can offer (last I check there were doing around 20-40W).

The cheapest MiniITX computer I've been able to come up with (building it myself) would cost me close to $300 (not including shipping). For $100 less (33% to be exact) this computer won't go unnoticed.

The only reason I might pass it is because it's not fanless, which is a big + on my end.

I've been following Everex for a while, and it seems that they finally pushed for an effort to get Linux after there strict Windows only area...

    Seems cool, I'd buy it.

And Wal-Mart pushing for something else after a bunch of bad things-- I don't think I'll bite. If it can be located to other places, like maybe Best Buy or Micro Center, I might. But I don't want to buy it. Wal-Mart ain't getting meh cash!

Yes, in fact I started a new thread earlier, specifically about gOS:

I'd like to hear about it if any of you have tried it.
