It was best summed by a work colleague of mine.

    "Microsoft: Marketing OK software brilliantly"

Having used it, I am unsure how Vista fits into that

Why Windows is the most used OS in the world ?
Windows comes by default on the huge majority of new computers, so it only seems logical that it would be the most used OS, in my opinion.

I refer you to my first answer. MS market brilliantly.

They bought DOS and licensed it to IBM for use in their new Personal Computer. The
rest as they say, is history.

It's not really a matter of opinion. As some have already said, it was shrewd marketing on the part of Microsoft at a key point in history.

elija is 100% correct. Microsoft bought QDOS, rebranded it and touched it up a bit, and licensed it to IBM. As you may recall, IBM is the originator of the PC. Because all PCs were shipped with MS-DOS, MS-DOS became very common amongst businesses. Other companies then began creating PC-clones (that is, a computer that adhered to IBM's concept, and was hardware- and processor-compatible). On the IBM PC, MS-DOS was known as PC-DOS, but IBM allowed Microsoft to sell MS-DOS to other manufacturers as well. Therefore, in order to further emulate the IBM PC, as well as allowing IBM PC applications to run on the clone (since these used the MS-DOS API), MS-DOS became very common in the clone world as well.

Anyway, as more and more applications were written for the MS-DOS API, computers became increasingly locked in to Windows. Many businesses still use fantastically old programs (next time you make a bank deposit, see if you can see the system they use). When you consider the fact that Intel processors still need to be backwards compatible to the 8086 (which was released in 1979, to give you some perspective), the chance that a brand new API will catch on widely in the business world is pretty unlikely.

So there it is: a brief look into Windows's history.

I'm not to sure if anyone has heard-- but a great movie called 'Pirates of Silicon Valley' which explains it all. You can see it here, free. Thanks Google Video!

is Windows the most used OS in the World? (desktop probably most definately, server possibly? embedded, I don't think so... from memory it was an embedded OS of Japanese origin although the name escapes me).

Found it! ITRON is the most commonly used OS in the World apparently! (source: Linux News: Software: The Most Popular Operating System in the World) but I did read it elsewhere before. TRON Project - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Wiki entry for TRON on which ITRON is based).
