    Not really liking Ubuntu...

    I installed Ubuntu but am not really liking it...I liked how KNOPPIX worked so I may install that instead.

    Ubuntu just seems to have too many issues. Many commands don't work, the package manager says certain things are installed that are not actually installed and doesn't let me download them etc...titlebar fonts being gigantic etc...

    Anyways, just letting you guys know my experience.

    That's the way to do it... experiment!

    You are on the right track. Keep experimenting with different distros until you find the one that feels right for you and your hardware.

    I was expecting some die hard Ubuntu user to come in here and chew me out. Ya, I will keep trying. I liked Damn Small Linux but it is way too bare bones for me. PCLinuxOS and KNOPPIX are my favorites so far. Debating on what one I want to use...

    yeah same here, thats an up-side to windows, just go with the most recent most stable release, but with Linux, theres more than one distro that gets updated, so you need to find the distro you like and that has the most stability for your needs

    so just look for reviews and read them, then try the ones with the best reviews, and you should have narrowed your search down quite well

    the only problem I've had is when it comes to installing programs, and library's missing, here's a link to a post I made with my theory on the matter;

    I am downloading Kubuntu and Mandriva. Going to see if either are better.

    I like how Ubuntu found my wireless card real easily. But I don't like how it didn't connect via wired connection no matter what I did. And I don't like how it is unstable and laggy. I also don't like how it is buggy as hell, titlebars on windows are like 200 pixels thick, it's odd...

    200 pixels? either your trying to ruin Ubuntu, or thats one damn corrupted installer, becourse that would have been set during installation, and it shouldn't have made it that thick unless;

    1) the person you got the disk from likes messing with Linux
    2) you chose a bad mirror
    3) you're using a crappy program to install
    4) you have a crappy burner
    5) the disk was scratched like hell
    6) you messed with the coding before installing

    but all those are highly unlikely, I can only think of one reason;

    you got the disk from a mag that turned a requirement of multiple disks on to the one disk, other than all those, I can't see how thats possible

    The person I got it from LOVES messing with Linux, as I got it from the creator's website.

    The bug is obviously from the developers of the OS. It goes on and off. The text in the entry fields of the login screen when i boot up is HUUUUUGE. So big that I can't even see what I am typing because I can only see a small bit of the bottom/top of the letts in the text field.

    I installed it according to the instructions, I went step by step through it.

    Sounds like your resolution wasn't set correctly, possibly a misconfigured graphics chip. What resolution is your screen normally and what what graphics chip/card are you using?

    No clue about the gfx card, but resolution is 1024x860 or whatever.

    Btw, It is doing weird large font things in the login screen of Mandriva. Could it be a BIOS problem? This is odd...

    i see your point nick, ubuntu is abit hard for learners (like me), like all that code-in-the-terminal stuff.....i do like it, but im finding myself using vista more & more again coz the.exe files are straight forward & they do it for you...
    i give:

    4/10...........not NOOB friendly!
