If you want Gnome on Slackware the easiest way to do it would probably be to install Dropline Gnome.

This is exactly the problem I've had trying to install Gnome in Crux. Did you use Dropline? Or did you try installing it some other way? I know they've had trouble with Dropline Gnome in Slackware 12 as they list on their website, but if there is no main menu in Slackware from Dropline, then I don't feel so bad about not having one either in Crux. I'm coming to the conclusion you have to be a Linux sorcerer to get Gnome installed and working correctly. It's becoming clear to me why Patrick stopped providing it during install. KDE on the other hand... you just install it and it works. Pity too because I've historically preferred Gnome's interface over KDE's when it come to full fledged desktop environments. Thankfully, my beloved IceWM has never given me such troubles.
