I am wondering if anyone else has the same pet peeve as me when it comes to avatars on forums.
I cannot stand when people use a small picture of just their own face as their avatar. It drives me bonkers! I'm not going to name anyone in particular, because this thread is not meant to flame anyone in specific. The reason it bothers me is because an avatar is meant to be a representation of you, not actually YOU. Also I just don't like associating a person's post with their face for some reason. Anyone else have this pet peeve?

An avatar on a forum is a picture... who cares?
What I don't like is when people change avatars... I remember people's avatars and when changed I don't have a clue who they are.
Smeg heads!

I never really heard any specific requirement for an avatar like its meant to represent you. Avatars have just always been (to me) any picture that takes ones fancy that they want to display.
I understand your point and I have nothing against it, but to me an avatar is just a picture. But hey at least me stumbling upon this post I know I'll be annoying some people out there with my avatar (only joking)
It is an interesting idea you've brought up and made me think, I'm still not changing my avatar though hehehe . But on the other note I also hate when people change their avatar, you take more notice of peoples picture than their name and do become a bit lost to who this person you've never seen around before is.

Avatars are like buttholes, everybody has one!

Avatar (virtual reality - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
So really, it isn't very becoming to say that you don't like someone's Avatar, that's like saying "Hey you're UGLY!" I hope it doesn't bother you too much though because there are a lot of folks with real Avatars. An avatar (abbreviations include AV, ava, avie, avy, avi, avvie, avis, avies, avii, and avvy) is computer user's representation of himself or herself, whether in the form of a three-dimensional model used in computer games,[1] a two-dimensional icon (picture) used on Internet forums and other communities,[2][3] or a text construct found on early systems such as MUDs. The term "avatar" can also refer to the personality connected with the screen name, or handle, of an Internet user.[4]I do not respond to private messages asking for Linux help, Please keep it on the forums only.

When people change there avatars it does take some getting used to.
Especially the people with a lot of posts.
i definitely understand how that could be annoying to some. How to know if you are a geek.
when you respond to "get a life!" with "what's the URL?"

I usually change my avatar after every 5-6 months and I love to do that.
I do the same with DEs, Wallpapers, color schemes and other stuff in my pc very often. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I've changed avatars occasionally. For a while it was an actual picture of me, now it's a cartoon character from one of my comics. It can be a bit jarring when you get used to one avatar for someone over a year or so and they change it abruptly.
BTW - Regardless of other opinions, arderydd, I like your avatar.

mine is actually my tattoo on my calf so where does it fit in. might be between an image representation and an actual picture of me. as for arderydd you are kind of a cute gal and probably now have net nerd stalkers because you posted a picture of yourself, in my case i could never have that happen, but that is why posting pictures of yourself is kind of iffy when it comes to public forums.
