I never really used slackware to be honest. But I heard once of the feature of slap-cat. And I thought it was an package management system.

My bad

Even if it were a package management system, that does not make it a source based system; Debian has package management and it is not source-based, in the same way neither is Slackware.

Like so many other newbies, I'm using Ubuntu (Gutsy). I like it a lot but I'm certainly open to trying other distros in the future.

I've played around a good bit, and still do. However I like to keep my 'production' machine running relatively stable software with good hardware support. Also having large full featured repositories so I don't have to start patching in source builds mean that my main system is easier to support/upgrade.

For the last few months I have been running Ubuntu on both my notebook and my main rig. I had mostly run SUSE before that and whatever took my interest on my notebook but I found that SUSE wasn't getting any lighter, repos weren't enough for me and the hardware support was decreasing.

Philosophy aside, I do need to have a system that works. I'm willing to work to do that but not if it means every upgrade means going back to the drawing board....so Ubuntu for the moment for me.

I'm really liking Debian based distributions. I'm using Kubuntu out of pure convenience and because their packages are relatively up-to-date as compared with the standard Debian Etch.

So far though I haven't really tried any source-based distros except LFS, and for some reason I really dislike most of the RPM based ones mentioned. Though I couldn't say why.

I use FC on the Tower at home and Xandros on the laptop. I voted 'other' cause my usage is about 50/50.

I used OpenSUSE for a few months early this year. Then switched back to Ubuntu Hardy beta/final.
