Someone can always make the case for 10 year old machines needing lightweight, but it gets silly with how little computers cost these days.
I Agree, new PC's are fairly cheap nowadays, but if you're like me and you have a family, these are some pretty tough times as far as money is concerned. Dropping $500.00 becomes a real gut buster when you have 10 other choices to spend your money on.
I think a lot of folks are making their current machines last longer in hopes of getting a bit more value from it. So I think these "Lightweight" DE and WM's are an awesome Idea.

Yeah, a lot of this depends on "what's in the box?" type stuff.
I said Gnome because of ergonomics. I think it's just easy to setup.
Were the box not a powerful one like today's computer, I'd use the terminal.
The terminal rocks.

More things need to be made for the terminal to make it a TUI.
I'm surprised more linux users haven't done this over the years.
It seems like everyone is focused on C++, python, and java.

I didn't include choice when making my post. Sorry about that. It slipped my mind. I should have thought my line of thought through better before posting. It seems that when online I forget stuff. I can think something through, but I don't type a whole lot so I miss explaining things as well as I should. My apologies.

I haven't messed with IceWM. Let me play with that for a few days and see what I think of it.

That's a matter of priorities. In your case a computer *shouldn't* be a top priority. Wife and kids should come first.

Is it too late to rephrase my earlier post to say new computer every 5 to 10 years?

Hi again Jason! No need for apologise. I perfectly understand your point and we can all cordially disagree. We wouldn't be human if we didn't from time to time!

I agree 100% , as this poll is all about GUI, I personally believe the GUI is just a very tiny part of linux making it able to have some eyecandy and browse the web in a normal way. For basic things like file management, music and even coding I run back to the terminal. It's just a lot more faster and in my opinion "user friendly". It takes time to get used to, I agree...but once you get the hang of it, you can do certain things a lot faster and more logic than with a GUI. I just don't need 30 MB program to do the same things I can do with simple bash commands. That's why KDE and GNOME aren't made for me...
XFCE comes with very little dependancies and "programs you most probably won't need".

i agree .. the terminal is by far the strongest point of Linux. (even though most of my work is done in the xterm)
