    I remember a sci-fi movie from (probably) the 70s.
Space trip, a couple of mens and a "knows everything" self conscious computer.

The computer "eye" looked like this:

    Cheers.

    2001 - A space odyssey.

    The computer was HAL 9000

HAL stood for Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer and
was apparently nothing to do with IBM.

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

Ah, classic lines and scenes from a great movie. I'm still not sure I completely understand the movie, though.

I don't think you were meant to. All the articles I've read about it say Kubrick was intentionally vague in his points just to allow the viewer to interpret the movie however they liked.

Yeah, even reading the book after watching the movie countless times left me wondering about lots of things. Very interesting, it is!

2001 was a product of it's time I think. Many films of that era were heavily influenced by the whole psychedelic drug scene and I think 2001 was a very good example. If you get a chance, read the original short story 2001 was based on entitled "The Sentinel." It is one of my all time favourite short stories, told as only Authur C. Clarke could tell it.

I know you meant self-aware but the first thing that came to mind when I read that was a computer that was worried whether or not the other computers around it thought it looked fat. Or perhaps, a suicidal robot. (article)

I know it was mentioned before on the forum but check out Tarkovsky's Solyaris. It's in Russian though, so subtitles. Similar vibe. If you couldn't stomach that check out the Soderbergh/Clooney Solaris from a few years back - it has a heavy Kubrick influence on it (as did the original though to a lesser extent). Another odd space film.

I always thought Hal signing Daisy, but getting slower and less "human" is one of the best scene in any movie. It is chilling
