"Microsoft does in another one"

End of Support for Netscape web browsers - The Netscape Blog
P.S. The title is what my dad said when I mentioned it to him. I'm not flaming; I just thought it fitting title.

I don't see that as a fitting title at all - Microsoft has nothing to do with this. Netscape was bought by AOL and it was just a matter of time before the browser was end-of-lifed. I don't understand why this is such big news. It's sucked as a browser for several years now and been completely eclipsed by its cribmate Firefox.

I quit using Netscape about 10 years ago, so its official death didn't bother me. I'm really surprised it hung on as long as it did, though.

I was thinking mainly from the aspect that Netscape was the first big browser, and Microsoft's I.E. was it's death in "the browser wars." I suppose in this way it had been "dead" for years (as you said) but now it's officially out of the game.
And just out of curiosity, didn't Firefox spawn from Mozilla, which came from Netscape? (the term "cribmate" confused me... this is not meant as an argument on any level)
- 01-07-2008 #5Yeah, should have said "Mozilla" there. Sorry. Mozilla did spawn from similar roots as Netscape, and then Firefox sprang out of Mozilla. And just out of curiosity, didn't Firefox spawn from Mozilla, which came from Netscape? I recently read that many of Netscape's developers now code for Firefox. I tried Netscape but I couldn't get on with the bugs. For me, it was always crashing. I loved the idea, but hated the thing itself.

It's kind of a shame as back in the V3 browsers, Netscape was
definately the best browser. It started to go downhill with
version 4, aptly named Netscape Complicator*
It did have that <censored> blink tag. A tag that had only one
valid use...
Code:<h1>schrodinger's cat is <blink>not</blink> dead</h1>
* Not Really - but close enough

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.
