    Linux newbie here

Hi everyone, a fresh newbie for the Linux grinder here.

I currently do computer forensics and IT administration for a small accounting firm. I've worked with Windows for as long as I can remember (exempting a short time with Commodore 64 <3 ) Earlier this year, I decided to explore the Linux world.

I began studying for my CompTIA Linux+ exam about 6 months back in order to find a starting point and get the basics down. Since then I've setup a Linux file server in my Server 2003 home domain. I forced myself to configure it purely through an SSH shell for the CLI experience. Logging into a domain member and being able to mount the share and adjust the permissions within Windows felt good! I've also been doing some experimentation with a Fedora 8-based FTP server in VMWare over the past few weeks to get a feel for properly configuring an FTP daemon and setting correct security.

I must say I've begun developing a real love for Linux. The amount of control you have over the OS, and the amount of documenation is quite amazing. I hope to continue learning this operating system and hope I can sometime assist others wishing to enter this community.

    Thanks!

    Matt

Hi Matt and welcome to the forums!

I must say, (in my experience) you are a rarity! It sounds like you've taken to Linux with exactly the right understanding and expectations! It seems many experienced Windows admins and IT types I've run into usually begin foaming at the mouth with angry tirades about how stupid Linux is because they can't administer it like they do Windows. Most seem to never understand the obvious fact that Windows and Linux are entirely different operating systems with different ways of doing things! I'm sure glad you are having a good time of it! If any of us can be of assistance, please feel free to call on us. That's what we're here for. Good luck!
