Coffee Lounge Newbie
I can't call myself a Linux newbie (yet) but I've been in here reading for the past hour and a half. Tomorrow or the next day we bring up a newly built PC and I'm considering Linux over the OEM winxp that we planned.
We delayed the new computer birth because we were on crappy satelite internet (don't even go there) and now have DSL so I can actually download and update things - yeah!
I'm a old DOS baby.. weened on windows and pretty open to new things. I am much better with software than hardware (hubby builds em and I install and get the software running)
I just wanted to say hi.. yall have a very well put together forum here.. great info.. love the user polls and the distro quiz. I imagine if I read 4 or 5 more days I would come to a decision on if I want to even put the windows OS on the machine or just start with linux (probably Ubuntu).. so far I think I want to run both (hard to part with Trillian) and getting the download on the new machine will require an OS to get started with anyway.
Which ever way I go, I'll probably be back for advise (and lots of reading)

Welcome to LinuxForums opal.
Linux is a great experience and since you are open to new things you should enjoy it. Having DSL connection is really useful. If you don't mind tell which distro you will pick.

I did that little quiz to see which distro I should pick.. it suggested 4 of them.. Ubuntu.. Kubunto.. Fedora and... umm.. the one that beings with "M". I've had a little interface with the folks at the Ubuntu forum (we had a hard drive crash not too long ago.. long story) and I think that's probably the one I will go with. I'm still reading.. lots ::::eyes cross::: and when I run across some screen shots, I'll probably make a decision. I may be open to new things, but I'm da.. darn picky about default fonts and things like that.
I really like that when I click on links in here, they automatically open in a new window.
<---can't wait to check out new brousers too....

My favorite web browsers are Firefox and Lynx. Firefox is so easy to use. Plus you can customize it in many ways. I also like Lynx, which is a texted based web browser, cause it is so fast.

Welcome!
Don't let the screen shots scare you. You can always change themes.
If you like text based stuff, you'll get a kick out of aaxine

Hi Opal and welcome to LFO. I also come from a Windows / DOS background from as early as DOS 4 (it seems so long ago now!) You might be interested in playing around with FreeDOS. It can be run inside an emulator on your PC if required.
DOS is very crude compared with the Linux command line (CLI) but still fun to use!
