Unless there is a specific reason to run Red Hat 9 I wouldn't bother...Red Hat 9 is several years out of date and unsupported. Since its release there have been major changes to the structure of Linux, everything from hotplug to udev to booting and bootsplashes...and that's to say nothing of hardware support and the huge developments in applications.

Even things like media players not having codecs, instant messengers no longer working....If at all possible look at a newer release. If it is for home use I suggest Fedora, otherwise you might consider the latest Red Hat Enterprise or CentOS which is a RH Enterprise clone.

I haven't read the book - but my point stands. Do you want to learning skills specific to a version of Linux that is extremely outdated?

Yes you probably can learn the basics of Red Hat 9 from that book, but the basics of Red Hat 9 can be so out of date (with the exception of bash scripting) that it won't benefit you with any modern system.

Studying Red Hat 9 is like studying Windows NT 4.0 in an age of Windows Vista.

I agree with bigtomrodney. You will be investing a lot of time and effort learning about many things that are outdated. I suggest you install a newer Linux distro like Fedora 8, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (or CentOS 5 which is a free RHEL rebuild). You can then get free documents from the Red Hat docs website.

I don't see anywhere that you've told us what this "project" of yours is, so we can't really tell you if Redhat 9 will be sufficient. I agree with the others in saying that you're better off learning from a current distribution of Linux than RH9. I would also suggest CentOS as a newer version to get started with.

Yes, you can technically learn some basics like the common Linux command-line utilities and the general file system layout, but anything more advanced than that (such as installin/removing packages or dealing with a graphical environment) will be very different in RH9 versus a newer distribution.

....should this book be helpful for the new-comers!!
    Yes, it should.

Can I learn red hat linux 9 from the beginning and its every operation+commands from this bible book??
No, I doubt that there is any book available that explains every possible operation and command with Red Hat 9.

do you think this book will be suitable for learning RHL 9 propely!!!
Probably about as good or better than most other books regarding the same subject.

If anybody has already gone through this book or seen/heard anything, plzzz explain me the good things and bad things of this bible book.
I used it back when I ran RH9 and liked it, but you'd have to decide for yourself what is good and bad about it for you.

Have fun with Red Hat 9!
