I've tried a number of different Linux distros : Xandros 3, Ubuntu 7, PCLinux, Wolvix and Freespire etc. I'm sure they have potential, but they're just not intuitive or friendly enough for the average person. They're rather unpolished .... If you had to choose a new OS, wouldn't you want the one that looks like a fancy magazine ad rather than one that looks like the funny papers?

I want a Linux OS that works smoothly, right off the bat. Finds my hardware, says hello to
the internet and off I go. I like stuff that asks me questions. Something more interactive. Hey, if I were able to build a robot, I'd want it to talk to me in a way I could understand. In it's present form, Linux has too much of a learning curve for the average person. This chews up time and that's something you never get back.

Hate to say this, but I feel Linux needs to be a bit more like Windows or Mac, because that's
what most computer users are used to. Don't get me wrong ... I certainly couldn't create an operating system, so I respect those who can. I'm not trying to ruffle anyones feathers.
Guess you could call this an I wish post. I'll wait a year and try Linux again to see if it's
something I can use with more ease.

Keep up the good work

Those users that want something more like Windows or Mac should use Windows or Mac. That's the nice thing about Linux being different... it gives those users that want something different from Windows or Mac a place to go.

If you should decide to try Linux again in the future, don't hesitate to stop in and say hello.

In the interim, enjoy your OS, whatever that might be.

It depends what you want out of a computer, Starting from scratch for the same effort you would get more out of Linux than Windows.

My OS is stinky old Win98se. As if that wasn't bad enough, I have a whopping (rural) dial up speed of 26K. Seems like webpage designers, think everyone has high speed everything. I can even watch a short movie clip. You can watch TV for free .... Why can't I have a high speed connection in such a rich country ?

Dear Ozar ..... No you don't understand. I can't afford Mac and I'm tired of all the snoops and bugs in Windows. I don't enjoy using my computer anymore. Everything seems like such a chore.
I'm 60 ,tired and my memory is failing. Maybe some kind older Linux programmer will come to my rescue.

Greetings to you and the UK,
Guess if Fedora 8 doesn't satisfy me, I may as well end it all.

Sorry, but I think it's you that doesn't understand.

You are being unreasonable expecting Linux to be perfect for your own needs but without the price of a Mac, and the security holes found in Windows, and yet it should remain free of charge, and still look and work just like a Mac and Windows. Linux is nothing more than an alternative to Windows and Mac. It's not for everyone, and isn't advertised as such. However, there are lots of different distributions available so that lots of users are able to eventually find one that suits their needs well enough. Still, not everyone will find total peace with Linux any more than they do with Windows or Mac.

Either way, we want you to have fun and enjoy whatever OS you should decide to use, so if you truly aren't having fun with your computer anymore like you said above, you should stop turning it on. I promise you that the world won't end just because you leave the on/off switch in the off position.

Hopefully you'll get it all worked out and live happily ever after with your computer.

First, I have to use my computer for a small business, so unfortunately, I must turn it on. Second, I would be willing to pay (if not tooo expensive) for a good linux OS .
I didn't want it to be windows or mac, just a little more like those operating systems.
As far as free ... I meant the availability of high speed services.
Actually the people that make these bloated websites, don't realize (or care?) that
they're missing a very large group of people that might bring them profit.

So how would you suggest that Linux developers go about building a version of Linux that's not too expensive for anyone, and yet is a good Linux OS for everyone? It's my opinion that Microsoft thinks they've done that with their own OS... it's not too expensive in their opinion, and it's just the right OS for everyone in their opinion.

I personally prefer Linux just as it is... lots of choices and options, lots of control for the end user, and free to download as often as you like.

Edit: I should add that if you truly must turn on your computer, you may be doomed to a life of misery. Hopefully it won't work out that way and you'll have fun with the OS of your choice.

Doomed to a life of misery?

Well maybe not. I do have some health problems that stress me out, but I think I'll eventually find a Linux OS that I like. Perhaps I just need to be patient. Thanks for your comments
