I'm doin my final sem B-Tech in Kerala. V d Linux Lover of our college is 'bout to start a Linux Forum by d end of this week. V hav decided to open up d proceedings by havin an introductory talk on 'Proprietary v/s Open Source'. V would like 2 lay a strong Foundation for d forum. For that v need to conduct some more programs related to Linux. Most of d forum members r newbies to Linux. So v d like to hav d guidance n suggestions of d Linux Veterans. So all dose who wish 2 c Bill Gates at his knees..plz suggest some programs that can b conducted in our college to increase d popularity of Linux..

No offense to Ejoftiduttu, of course --just for the convenience of others.
Some of us here don't even speak English natively, so it's not customary for us to use severe slang and whatnot. I speak "properly" because... well, it's what mood I'm in, really. And I'm nice, most of the time.

Otherwise, you might want to note that the general public will only see you as a protestant to "the norm" if you are only advertising yourself as a protester against their norm (id est, Windows). A serious suggestion is to rethink your tactics and go for the advantages of Linux, rather than the disadvantages of Windows or a power-hungry monster like Microsoft. Once people are willing to listen, then they will hear why you hate Microsoft; otherwise, they will just think you are some computer nerd with a possibly great (or possibly ridiculous) alternative to what they have but will never be capable of using.

Anyways, it also might not be a bad idea to do some ambulance chasing and subtle patronizing here and there. Keep hearing about computer complaints from one group of people or about one specific problem? Advertise specifically for that point! I thought it was hilarious when, at my "orientation to online classes" they were saying "You can get Microsoft Office for only $150!!" I literally laughed aloud and shouted "or you can get OpenOffice for FREE!!!" (To which I got quite a few of follow-ups...)

The local Linux user group (that seems to have died before I moved here...) would hold Linux install parties, where you could bring a computer and they would install Linux onto your computer and give you a nice little intro and whatnot. I always thought that'd be a good idea. What'd really wow them is if you have a snazzy LiveCD with you when you go to fix a Windows problem, and while you are fixing that you can show off what all Linux does, too.

As for the forum, all I can suggest is Q's and A's and opinions (more or less what is done here...). For the proprietary versus open source, you probably already know the benefits of Ogg Vorbis formats versus mp3/Windows-specific formats, or the customizability of Linux and other open-source formats versus those less malleable (and showing off some of your own tweaks).

As amusing at it may be to type like a chav, please remember that we have a multinational user-base here. There are many people here for whom English isn't a first language, please have some consideration for those users.

'didn't' is acceptable because it's English. 'V would like 2 lay a strong Foundation for d forum' is poor English, and its use shows the user to be lazy and inconsiderate. Those for whom English is their first or only language will struggle to understand you. Please keep this kind of communication to your mobile phone and use language that includes everyone, not slang that is designed to exclude.
