Forty years ago after the 1968 " Tet Offensive " during the Vietnam war when my friends and relatives were being sent back here in bags or all broken up I stopped laughing about the energy of the cosmos and its effect on human beings.

A planet 93 million miles away grows our food and provides for our very existence. The universe is vast and complex; its effect on us is involved in everything we do. What we do does not effect the universe at all.

If you have a good day thursday your year will also be good. If you have a bad day, then you can expect a bad year. It would be wise of you not to have any confrontations Thursday, especially with the police.

Nine Star Ki is but one of the " Astrologies Related to the I Ching ".

Although there are many websites associated with the study of Nine Star Ki they seem to be set up to gather money rather than providing detailed and accurate information.

I learned of it many years ago before the Internet existed because a woman I was seeing made me go to some of her yoga classes and the instuctors wife was very proficient at telling what kind of energy an individual harvested at the moment of their conception.

Members of Michio Kushi's East/West Foundation also taught me aspects of Nine Ki astrology when they were located in Brookline Village Massachusetts many years ago when I studied Macrobiotics.

I use the Chinese system because it accurately distinguishes the different numbers for males and females. The only exception there being that number three males and number three females occupy the same year. The last being 2006 where everyone born that year is a number three Dog person.

Some years ago I used the I Ching almost every day... It seemed to make sense, and I had a copy designed for Westerners like me. It was almost like having a good friend, always on hand to offer good advice. And in fact, the advice it gave was better than some of the stuff I received from flesh and blood people!

I just tried to find my old copy, but it's buried under the shameful amount of junk I have in my flat. I wanted to let you know who translated it. This is going to sound like one of those dreadful motivational adverts you see everywhere, but when I followed the I Ching closely I also meditated regularly. My life actually improved quite dramatically: I found a new girlfriend, moved away from a place I didn't like and became a student (it was my ambition back then).

Ironically, I stopped using it after that, and perhaps this was a mistake. It's a very old book, and is a key Taoist text... The other version I have (translated from Chinese) is almost impossible to understand... I shall continue to burrow into my junk.

If I could recommend a book? 'The Tao of Pooh'. A good way to start the year!

Fingal, An oriental store I used to frequent had a little place set up in the back of the store where the family patriach would sit with some of his elderly friends.

One day I was in the store and he invited me to sit down with him because he wanted to know if I truly understood the meaning of the Yin/Yang symbol hanging around my neck.

Months later this old man chided me about a book I had bought concerning the works of Lao Tzu. The old man told me that it is virtually impossible to translate Chinese into English. He said it would be like trying to cram an elephant into a rabbit hole. He was quite correct. There is not any way to prove the existence of of Yin/Yang because it can not be detected by any of our five senses.

A western doctor will deny that meridians exist because he can not see them in his microscope. A western doctor may be a great surgeon capable of transplanting organs. However if he transplants an organ from a #9 fire person into the body of a # 1 water person the organ will be instantaneously rejected even if both of the blood types are exactly the same.

It is extremely difficult and frustrating to try and make anyone aware that their five senses can only reveal 3% of all that exists.

Yes I'm not surprised - In a way I think I was just an 'I Ching' tourist. Applying its principles seemed to help me, but only up to a point.

There's quite a large Chinese quarter where I live, and I go there sometimes. It's very vibrant and you can get a cheap (but very good) meal at some of the restaurants... But I avoid the ones run by Triads!

Edit: My copy of the I Ching is this one. It seems to still be in print. Incidentally, I once heard a Chinese person on the radio talking about certain aspects of his own culture, and (even after reading just a couple of books) I realised he was wrong. This seems to be a hard subject to grasp!

Fingal, in every human society there are groups like the triads as well as groups like the monks. It is but a part of the makeup of mankind. In every direction there are extremes as well as norms.

Michio Kushi always made it clear to us that whatever has a front also has a back.
My grandfather gave me many lectures when I was very young. One of those lectures was about how every single human being was capable of killing another human being. It is part of our nature.

It is also part of our nature to help a stranger in distress without even expecting a thank you.
