Are we talking about strictly a die change or an entire motherboard/CPU upgrade? If so, you should also consider the AMD64 or Intel Core 2 Duo.

Well generally speaking the Pentium 4 would be the best so I marked that but it really depends on a lot of things such as processor speed, L2 caches size and the manufacturing scale. With these generations you can safely enough ignore the manufacturing scale factor and look at speed and cache.

The Celeron processor is a Pentium processor with less L2 cache. This is a money saving idea as this memory is the most expensive. It is harder to tell though since Celerons are not numbered the way Pentium chips are (I, II, III, 4). So I would discount Celerons any time and the Duron is the AMD equivalent so I'd knock that on the head too.

As for the K6...well that's pretty old. They only went up to 300MHz as far as I remember. For my bet I would say go with the Pentium 4. Remember though that AMD and Intel processors use different socket types so you will not be able to interchange these. Also the socket types change with generations.

If this is a case of purchasing something new I think as techieMoe suggested you could do a lot better than any of these processors.

Pentium 4 is your best option, there. All of which are outdated now.

The p4 is the latest of the four on the list, and is even occasionally found still in use in new computers today.
