    Windows IT Technical Question

There is this client that has two servers. One holds applications the other holds data. The application server is Windows Server 2003 and the data is on a Linux server. Now the client wants to switch the Linux Server to Windows Server 2003. Most of the documents are just text documents and a few applications.

My question is...Is there a way to convert the linux server to windows 2003 without losing all the data?

For instance if I create a fat32 partition on the linux server can I move all the data to that partition so I can access it from Windows 2003?

    Joe

Sounds good to me. Or NTFS, for that matter.

Would that just be safer? And would it be cross compatible??

so long as its ntfs or fat (i use ntfs) its cross compatible, and its much newb friendly (my main reason for using it) i dont know much about partition swapping.

FAT32 is cross compatible. Their is nill possibility of accessing *X file systems on Windows and DOS. NTFS on Linux is unstable at the moment. In this case, FAT32 comes to the rescue.

    Update

So I went to the customer sight today to see what the issue was first hand. And I was wrong...a little bit.

So they have a linux server right now. It holds all the data and applications and personal documents.

The also have a Windows 2003 Server which is not being used which they want to use INSTEAD of the linux server.

Is the process still the same to migrate all the user documents and info over to the 2003 server? Copy to a fat32/NTFS external drive? Or would I be able to put the 2003 server on the same network at the linux server and migrate data over a network connection?

I really should have paid more attention in my linux administration class

Network migration would probably be your best choice, then. But yes, you should be fine to just copy onto a Fat32 external/alternate drive.

BTW I mentioned NTFS because I've had no notable orblems with it thus far, but Fat32 is the better choice.

Can someone pm me the "how to" on adding a windows server to a linux server's network?

Or could I do it from the Windows server to the linux server...in other words log in to the linux server from the Windows server and do the work from there.

I'm just trying to avoid doing any work on the linux server since I don't know what I can screw up.
