[SOLVED] Nameserver Annoyances
This thing where so many ISP nameservers now redirect you to their own special search page is beginning to really annoy me. I liked it in the old days where you'd enter a URL into the URL location bar and if the address you entered was no good, you'd get the usual "404 page not found error". The way they are doing it now seems a bit like they are pushing their spam down your throat.
Of course, some people might prefer the way things are now. Still, I wish there was a simple way to stop this action. Fortunately, I was finally able to find some nameservers that give me the old way again.
Oh, and I also found that some nameservers will hijack your browser and take you to their page when you are actually looking for another page.oz

I noticed that when I try to enter an address I'll occasionally mess something up (usually out of laziness to type "http://www.*.*/", which I actually usually do just to be accurate), at which point I either am sent to the correct page by some mystical, mind-reading blunder, or some other related site (exempli gratia, "paranoia" sends me to the related Wikipedia page). At times this could be genuinely good and useful, but I have to say that I agree with you on this subject, especially since Firefox (and most if not all browsers) have a nice little search one tab away from the URL bar. Also, since I (more than) occasionally snoop around different parts of public websites, I like to be able to distinguish between server-side 404 pages and actual "this page does not exist" errors.

Yes, I agree. What I also hate is , when I buy a domain , and it expires , someone ( or some organisation ) buys it again and puts some weird stuff on it called advertising.

I've tried at least 20 different nameservers and they all have their own little issues to deal with.
Right now, I'm using my ISP's nameservers and they are fast at name resolving, but they too direct you to a search page when the page you were looking for is not found.oz

Yes, I agree. I have all my bookmarks stored on del.icio.us and not on my browser, but I have a few good sites like MacRumors, t-mobile.nl ( :P ), Linuxforums , CNETTV , and the WHM login page of all my servers in the bookmarks bar in Firefox.
Just so convenient.

I found the OpenDNS nameservers to be some of the fastest available, but they redirect, too. They make their income off of ads they plaster onto the 404 page not found webpage.

I have my own nameserver(s), so I have no one to blame but myself.
