Guess I should give you guys the long story...

well, Ill explain as to how this game can be done. My brother is making a business, he is building a company called Heimech who makes games. He was planing on making games for Windows and we have a few programmers and a story writer. He is in the Marines for the time being and I have been talking to him about leting me manage a linux division. We operate out of our house at the moment. The people we have with us now are small in numbers and voulenteered to help program an MMORPG called "Lands of Denaka" for Windows. It is still in development and not available for release, but it's there. This Idea is in it's infancy and you are right, it will cost money in the long run but it will be worth what you would have payed for Call of dity 4... or whatever else.

Careful. There are quite a few folks who would say there are already good games for Linux out there. They're not your personal favorite choice in genres, but they exist. ... Good games can and already have been made for Linux.
Ok, I should stop using the term "good games". You're right, there are a plethora of games for Linux that people feel are good games. I'll replace "good game" with, as you called it, "high-quality story-driven FPS".

I just think the scope of a high-quality story-driven FPS game done entirely by volunteers is much larger and more complicated than a "let's sit down and do it" approach can handle.
Oh, absolutely. I didn't mean to come across with such an approach, and I know it takes more than that, but I do believe it can be done. If Linux was made, is maintained, and is contributed to, by volunteers over the Net, I have no doubt that something like this could be done, provided we get in contact with the right people who have the skill.

If you're looking to start a full-fledged game company, hiring programmers, modelers, writers and everything else, you're looking in the wrong place, and I misunderstood you.

yeah..

I would like it to be an open source project, but office politics argue otherwise. If we were to find enough people to help develof this it would be another story, but this may take time and effort and thats what most pople dont have in this situation. most of the programmers would be people looking for something to do and once they are bored would abandon the project leaving us short programmers. Thats why it probably wont be open source like Id want it to be

I don't understand. Your (developing) company can be a complete game developing company and still make the games open source.

well, we would just be giving it the push in the right direction if it is open source. it would be entirely up to the public to continue the rest... Realisticly though it is probably going to be payware and not open source.

Back up there, tiger. No one says that software you pay for and software that's open-source have to be mutually exclusive. Just because you throw the source code out there for people to use doesn't mean that everyone will automatically rip off your game.

You could (for instance) build an open-source game engine and charge for the content of said engine, much like what Id Software does. You can download a dozen versions of the Doom and Quake engine these days but you still have to buy (or otherwise acquire) the official CDs to use the Id maps.

If you give people value for their money, they won't try to rip you off.
