Linux Mint!
holey crap people... how can i break this....
i have been a loyal ubuntu/kubuntu user for about 2 years now, i love kde, but i think kubuntu's implementation of kde isn't very good, Ubuntu Gnome works perfect, but lets face it.....it looks out dated and ugly without major theme changes, but now.....
I have found the perfect distro.... don't want to upset anybody, cause i love ubuntu/kubuntu, but i tell you what.... Linux Mint is everything ubuntu is and more.... their gnome implementation is outstanding, and kde is as perfect as open suse's implementation, which is a BIG deal. Plus all the codecs are installed by default, it has quite a few tools that ubuntu doesn't have and its got great wireless support.

Im happy

oh, did i mention that it looks much better???
and everything seems to Just work. ubuntu has this too, with how everything seems to work, but a brand new theme and polish up couldn't hurt.
until then, Mint it up

You don't have to feel bad about moving to another distro. I personally dislike Ubuntu and have never understood why its so popular because to me its just another average distro. I am however impressed with Linux Mint (both KDE and GNOME). I am not even a GNOME fan, but the way its presented in Mint is really cool.

ya i tried it its awesome if i could resolve 3 things id stay with it (1) get my storage drive to mount automaticly (2) virtual box is giving me some error about some file needs to be put in a root and sure enough in root machine runs (3) if file sharing virtual box says works when its installed

I believe you've just answered your own question. Ubuntu is popular (IMO) because it is just that: an average distro that appeals more to the average person than others. Like it or not, average people are the majority of the world.... otherwise they wouldn't be average.

That being said, I like the fact that Mint doesn't have a problem including useful things that Ubuntu is afraid to because of legal issues. However I still usually end up just using Ubuntu and adding these on myself most of the time.Registered Linux user #270181

i had problems running mint. I used it on my wifes dual boot because i thought it would be easy. sometimes menus wouldnt load for my user when i logged on. it was ok for the most part but ubuntu seems to work for me with little problems. i came from using Slackware initially.

Well, this is probably in the realm of personal preference. Ubuntu just feels more visually polished to me than, say, Debian. It has more configuration utilities than Slackware. A lot of things just work out of the box including my wireless card, unlike the last time I tried SuSE. There aren't any "Gee whiz" differences though, I agree. However that's true for most major Linux distributions these days. Once you get past the GUI tweaks, they all offer essentially the same toolset.

I've currently got Mint on my laptop (I've been hopping every other month or so), but it unfortunately has the same problem as Gutsy, Suspend is broken. And this is a no-go for me. Other than that, I think it's a really nice distro.
