I just finished viewing a past favorite of mine; "Event Horizon"; released in the summer of '97. I suspect many here have seen it at least once. For an 11 year old sci-fi/horror flick, I think it holds up well. The premise is a rescue mission launched to seek out survivors and data from an FTL (faster than light) ship, the Event Horizon. The Event Horizon, which disappeared seven years previous (circa 2040), mysteriously reappears at the edge of the solar system, broadcasting a distress beacon. The tag line for cinematic release was "Infinite Space, Infinite Terror". The moniker, Event Horizon is an astrophysics term used to describe the arbitrary boundary surrounding a black hole, inside of which escape is not possible. Without giving anything away, it does play tangentially into the story line.
Not everyone will like "EH", but as space operas go, I think it's one of the more atmospheric. In fact it drips atmosphere. You will need to suspend disbelief a bit, esp. concerning the presentation of supernatural elements, and the disregard for the laws of the cosmos. But the soundtrack and the cinematography along with effective pacing, passable acting, and judicious use of special effects make that do-able for the most part. From the opening credits, you know you are going to be entertained. It features an ensemble cast made up equally of talented actors from the US and UK, and lead by Lawrence Fishburne and Sam Neill. There are worse ways to waste an hour & a half. In fact, I think I'll give it a second viewing before returning it to the video store.

p.s. Moe, do you plan to launch a thread to replace this one for 2009?
