I've used (**** me I still use) visual studio 2005 professionally on occasion.
Best? Best? Ha! It is, as is the case with most modern Microsoft software, a
slow and bloated piece of software. I bet you thought I was going to say crap!
If you truly think that it is the best, then you haven't used anything else.
Ever! I will give it credit though. Its' intellisense is almost scary at times.
Anyway a quick comparison. All this is my opinion of course.
On the same hardware which is faster?
Linux. On hardware that Aero bought to it's knees, Compiz Fusion is running
like a new Ferrari. Windows open quicker and it boots in seconds compared to
minutes when I was running Vista on this machine.
On the same hardware which is more stable?
Linux. I had to reboot Vista at least once a day. And that was a good day. I
only have to reboot my Linux when either I do something stupid or I update
the kernel. Hell, I had to reboot Vista when updating the ****ing browser!
Which has a vibrant, worldwide open developer community?
Linux. Windows is developed as close source. Let me play the paranoia card.
How do you
know that everything you do on your (and if you are running
Vista I use the term loosely) computer isn't being stored somewhere in
Redmond. Simple answer. You don't, you take it on trust*. With Linux you can
poke around in the code and find out!
Which is easier to use on the desktop?
It's about even. I always use the example of building a time machine, grabbing
a Victorian, they would have no clue as to how to use either.
Which is easier to use on the server?
Linux. Enough said.
Which has more games?
Windows. But Linux is starting to get installed on more and more computers.
The effect will be one of two things. Either more commercial games will be
developed for Linux or fewer will be developed for Windows. I don't expect
either to happen to soon. Linux already has some good games out there.
Sauerbraten, Torcs and Battle for Wesnorth to name but three.
If the price of breaking free of Microsoft is missing out on a few games, then
it is well worth it. Of course, as I said earlier, all this is my opinion. If you are
happier in the Virus-ridden, spyware laden, D.R.M'd to Hell world of Windows,
then you are free to stay there.
A wonderful thing. Choice.
* I'm fairly sure that doesn't really happen**
** Note that I am only
fairly sure
