Ubuntu 8.04, safe to upgrade?

Do you guys recommend going to Ubuntu 8.04 when it's released or do you guys recommend waiting it out a bit? I know that this isn't a Windows Operating System but I was wondering if the same rules apply to a new version of Linux.

Thanks

I'm using the Beta right now. I really like it, except that Firefox 3.0 beta is still a bit buggy. I recommend it, though you will probably want to wait a couple days after release to get Hardy, as the Ubuntu website gets hammered on the first day or two after release.

They do extensive testing, so it should be fine to go after it once it's released. Of course, there can always be problems for any particular user, but you'll most likely be fine.

There are usually a lot of advances made in the six months between releases and especially so when it comes to hardware support. I'd say try 8.04 when it arrives, looks like a winner to me.

Well thank you guys, very much appreciated. It's good to see solid applications, of course like anything, problems arise but I am sure it's nothing like windows.

I was about to kill myself a couple a days ago using Vista and this Service Pack 1 release and all that crap that comes with it.

Once agian thanks for the input.

I played with the Kubuntu alpha release briefly, and found it very interesting. At the time I was using an older P3 rig, and with KDE 4 it was taxing my hardware to say the least. I'm in the process of putting together a new C2Q rig though, and will load 8.xx on it as soon as it's released.

I am pretty new to the whole Linux world as you can see from the previous question, but how often do these version updates come out?

No specific time frame is needed just more or less if anyone knows.

Thanks,

I think it's about every 6 months for the *buntu distros. Maybe someone will correct if that's wrong.

Thanks,
About every 6 months Ubuntu releases a new major version. However about every two years or so they release a special "Long Term Support (LTS)" version. This one is special because it will continue to receive updates for 3 years, unlike the 6-month releases that only receive updates for 18 months.
