I like to think of Ubuntu as the Barak Obama of Distros. It's sharp and hip and fun. That being said, it's not my favorite, but that may have more to do with the quirks of my computer than anything else. I'm a huge advocate of just simply downloading and trying all the different distros you can until you find a home, or, like me about four or five distros that I use.
By the way, the very best way to start, or even stay, in some limited cases, is with the live CD versions. These allow you to try out a lot of the atmosphere without actually installing it on your hard drive. You can peek into these universes without committing to an install.
Also, I advise just setting up a separate machine to play with for a few months. I know some go for dual-boot systems. But I myself have never enjoyed them. I have a Mac workstation and a PC work station with Linux distros. I imagine in Pakistan it is almost all PCs and Windows. This is just my belief: Keep your Windows and Linux world's separate.
Have fun. I will be rooting for you.
Truly,
Mel C. Thompson, Eternal Newbie.

A long post hehe!
Yes most of the people here use Windows. I myself have VMWare installed on my PC so I won't have any problem in running Linux. Although I agree that Ubuntu is for casual use like daily use, browsing, internet e.t.c but for some serious business I will use other distros like RedHat, Centos e.t.c.

There is nothing wrong with Ubuntu. 16000+ packages are available in Ubuntu Sources. I am using Ubuntu ( LTS ) in two servers and its working pretty fine. Plaining to upgrade both to Hardy ( 8.04 ) in a few months.
Distro choice depends on likes/dislikes and Hardware compatibility. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Welcome to LinuxForums!

What are they putting in the water over there, Ali?
A lot of new (and established) forum members from that part of the world. Looks like it's turning into an open source stronghold. That's cool.
