Where did all the window managers go?

Hey all,

I'm a long time Linux user (11 or 12ish years now), and was talking today with another long timer about old window managers when I realized that I have no idea what happened to any of them. I did a quick search and saw, for example, that IceWM actually released a new version in december, but most of the other projects I looked at (E, WindowMaker, BlackBox, etc.) didn't seem to have any development to speak of for years now. Could it be that they are all dead (except to the uber-specialist)? What happened to the good ol' days when I could fill up my desktop with ridiculous applets via WM and still be considered bleeding-edge? What say ye?

*sigh*

Blackbox development was folded into Fluxbox, WindowMaker lives on at least in spirit with GNUStep, and I've never heard of E.

Never heard of E???

Enlightenment was one of the coolest "desktop experiences". They were developing Enlightenment DR17 (e17) forever but it doesn't look like anything has been done for a longish while. It's kind of a shame because they had a lot of innovative ideas.

And of course Linux is that old. Whipper snapper.

The Linux Kernel has been around since 1991.

Enlightenment I've heard of. I've just never heard it referred to as "E". There is an Enlightenment Live CD that demos the latest and greatest:

Where Debian meets Enlightenment

I don't know how new it is, but it's there.

Enlightenment is still developed and available.

Amazing. Although DR16 has been the stable for years and years and years now.
