Greetings from a Linux newbie

Greetings all,

I am reviewing several Live CDs to see which flavor of Linux I would like to install and currently leaning towards Mandriva. I've been a Windows user all my life (with the exception of DOS) but have only toyed with Linux.

Before I install on my HD I have a couple of questions if I may. My current machine acts as the home server and I wanted to verify that the windows clients will be able to access existing files.

Also, I run Photoshop CS to process the RAW file format from my Canon 10D. Is there an open source alternative that will handle RAW file formats?

And lastly, I'm a huge fan of Battlefield 2142 and would hate to give that up. I'm aware of programs like Crossover, Wine, etc. that can be used to run Windows based programs but wanted to check if any one has used them and how well they run.

Sorry, one last thing, promise, if anyone has some good links, or books to bone up, that would be a huge help.

Thanks a bunch, and sorry so long winded.

Hi, gengh1s! Welcome to LinuxForums!

Using SAMBA, you will be able to see and ACCESS files from Windows machines.
Not sure about Photoshop, I don't use it personally. But I've heard good things about getting Battlefield to run on Linux boxes. Wine, Cedega and all the rest do have limitations, so I would advise keeping a Windows partition active until you get used to the Linux way, and to make sure you can run Windows apps that may not have a Linux equivalent.
As far as some info to start with, you can try the link in my signature. It may start you off in the right direction.

Visit often, and enjoy your stay!!!

No probs! Gimp Is Perfect...though the absence of a master window for the app may make a little difficulties for Photoshop users its perfect!!! I also used photoshop and found Gimp to be quite powerful!
