| Greetings, All! I've benefited many times from the vast knowledge others have shared on the forums, but only recently decided to join. While I don't know it all, I hope that my experiences & research can prove just as beneficial to others.
I'm an IT Director for a physician's practice in my hometown of Greenwood, South Carolina. I have a daughter, Alaina, who is 15 months old. I recently bought a home and am in the process of remodeling & renovating it now. Other than that, I'm just a normal guy who thoroughly enjoys tinkering with technology (new & old alike) and solving a problem every now and then to earn my keep.
As of yet, Linux is a personal venture for me more than a professional one, but I would love to incorporate it into my work environment. Any suggestions on workplace applications would be greatly appreciated.
On a lighter note, a very good friend of mine (who originally introduced me to Linux) once gave me this scenario when trying to describe to concept of an open source operating system:
"While traveling down the road together one afternoon, an Apple engineer, a Microsoft engineer, and a Linux engineer found themselves thoroughly upset when their car broke down on the side of the highway. Each representative had his own thoughts as to how the issue should be resolved:
The Apple employee immediately spoke up, 'We should streamline the car; really give it a new look, make the radio easier to use & give it a new paint job.'
The Microsoft employee was the next to make a suggestion, 'Let's just close all the windows, and restart the car.'
Finally, the Linux guru stepped up, 'Let's tear out the motor, break it completely apart, remove what we don't like, add some new options we do like to improve performance, and when we're finished, give the plans for the new build to others.'"
(Needless to say, that sold me.)
Have a wonderful week, all!
