Question How much of Linux users is out there?

Hello guys,

I have a question. There were probably many of calculations about Linux users.
I'm asking this, since I was checking the statistics (Awstats) of my Linux server and for one website and I found very strange info:

Visitors OS:
Windows 209504 94 %
Macintosh 1438 0.6 %
Linux 1298 0.5 % ,<- 0.5% ?????
Sony PlayStation Portable 19 0 %
BSD 5 0 %
Unknown Unix system 3 0 %
Symbian OS 1 0 %

This is kinda strange, since a lot of people use Linux.

Can you guys explain this (I really wanna know what this means).

Yeah, a lot of people use Linux. But a !LOT! of people use a competing OS.

What I don't understand is that these numbers don't add up to 100% there seems 5% missing??
Can't tell an OS by it's GUI

I added up all the numbers and that percentage seems to be correct. Or are you surprised that 0.5% is all you got? Believe it or not, that's pretty representative of the number of Linux desktop users out there in all the polls I've seen.

Linux desktop market share is up as much as 61 percent, study finds | The Open Road - The Business and Politics of Open Source by Matt Asay - CNET Blogs

W3C puts it at just about 1-2% these days, which is a significant increase from past numbers.

Yeah, but I find it a little weird.
How can there be 0.2 mio MS Widnows hits and only 1300 Linux ones?

I mean, a half of my MSN contacts have Linux, so I really didnt expect so low results.

Also, here are results for last 8 days (1-8th april 200
Windows 55769 94.2 %
Unknown 2131 3.6 %
Macintosh 977 1.6 %
Linux 256 0.4 %
Symbian OS 24 0 %
BSD 8 0 %
Sony PlayStation Portable 2 0 %

Showing pretty same results.

EDIT: And whats the most unacceptable is that there are 3 times more Mac visits than Linux one? Mac which is really rare???

I think you have a misguided view of the number of people who run Microsoft Windows versus Apple and Linux. In the articles I've read, Apple is the number 2 desktop in the world behind Windows, and they're only at around 3%. Linux is less. Mac is significantly less rare than Linux in the wild.

Heh, well, this really shocked me. I tought there are at least 40% of all PC owners Linux users.

I know I feel really dumb now.

Don't beat yourself up. It's easy to get used to large numbers of Linux users when you spend enough time on a forum like this. We're still a minority in the outside world though.

Don't desperate, it takes a few months!

When users won't be able to upgrade to Windows Vista (because its very high requirements), they will change to Linux.

Well, Microsoft is gonna release Windows 7 next year, so noone really cares for Vista.
