In some way, its viral marketing. They send the discs to you for free with the hope that you will continue using Ubuntu and probably purchase support and other services from them at a later stage. Sending you free discs also helps them increase their market share and good standing in the Linux community as well as reinforcing the Ubuntu founders belief that free software should be readily accessible to all.

Yes. Canonical, Ltd. is the company who distributes Ubuntu (and those CDs you got in the mail). They make their money by selling commercial support to large companies, much like Redhat.

To add to what benefit they get out of sending you free discs: I myself tend to have them send me a couple of free discs and then make many copies of that disc to hand out to my friends. I imagine I'm not the only person who does this, since it's encouraged right there on the sleeve. Thus, they multiply their presence with a little goodwill.

I tend to find that giving away a copy of the disc only makes for a good coffee coaster

I have to actually convince my friend's it's worth giving it a try, and then install it...

And you know what? one of them has purchased two copies of XP on ebay, and they have both been dodgy..didn't work (activate properly) - and he STILL won't give Ubuntu a try. It makes me laugh,

    and then cry

Some people don't get it, no matter how large the neonsigns in front of them...
