    Question from PCLOS Newbie..LOL

Ok, so im brand new to the Linux world, I have PCLOS 2007 installed on my desktop PC. I was browsing at available games, and saw Flight Gear Flight simulator.

But under linux downloads, how do I know which version is compatiable with PCLOS, and what files I need, and where to put them etc.

It would probably help if I could go online with my PCLOS and access the repository, but I dont have that set up yet. I have sprint mobile broadband on my laptop that im gonna try to get set up on my PCLOS desktop hopefully!

Any tips or advice is much appreciated.

    Thanks from a newbie!
    Rick

*Strongly* advise staying with the repository. When doing your own, you lose a lot of support.
I'm not on my pclos system or I would check for you. Please stay with the repository

    Smile Thanks for the reply

Yeah, im eager to get access to the repository, I just ordered a PCI to PCMCIA adapter card with any luck, PCLOS will recognize it and I will be able to use my Sprint Mobile Broadband on my PCLOS. Then hopefully, the instructions provided by sprint for setting it up on a linux system are easy to follow. LOL

The area I live in, is pretty limited, basically dial up, DSL not available in my area, so thats why I went with mobile broadband. Slow internet is the pits on any system, Sprint is pretty fast most of the time.

I did a search for "Flight Gear Flight" and didn't see it
You can always ask on the forum for it to be added. That's the safest way to get it.

    Thanks for checking...

    Thanks for looking.

I did download the windows version of flight gear on my laptop and it kinda sucks anyway, probably not that great of a program, it is free..LOL, unless its better on linux.

I put an ATI AGP 3.0 video card in my PCLOS and really dig the 3D effects on the desktop...SWEET!

The thing to remember about flight gear is that is not a game. It
is a simulation and as a result is really, really <censored> hard.

Don't expect to load it up and buzz around without a hellishly steep
    learning curve.

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

I fully agree about staying with the repository. It saves the need to get precisely geeky about dependencies, kernel versions and all that. Also, FlightGear gets awesome as one adds more world scenery and features. It now has specialist forms, the most amazing of which is to run it concurrently with GoogleEarth providing the scenery. There are specialist sub-communities that 'fly' around airports while talking to each other on IRC. You can buy force-feedback sim controls to use instead of a gamer's joystick.

Know right away that it is a simulator, good for training - not a 'game'. If you rev up the engines on a stationary Cessna Citation without thinking about the thrust direction control, it will put its tail down onto the ground. You get fired for doing that with a real one!

    Have fun

I think Im just used to FSX

Yeah, I know its a simulator, its just way different the FSX, I fly fsx all the time, and on the flight gear version for windows, it didnt seem to wanna even work well. One plane I tried, I was at full throttle and couldnt really even get it to roll, maybe there are just some settings that need to be tweek.

I tried a helicopter in flight gear and it was like the controls were backwards, or just really uncontrolable.

Maybe it will work better on a linux system, I dont know, it would be worth a try if I can find it in the repository.

that is if I ever get online with it, still waiting for my ordered adapter to come from hong kong...LOL I just ordered it thursday, it hasnt been that long, im just inpatient.
